Steps

  1. Record or Create a Drum Region

Record a MIDI drum performance on a Software Instrument track or create an empty MIDI region by selecting an area on a track and going to 'File > New MIDI Region.' This provides the raw material for editing your drum pattern.

  2. Open the Piano Roll Editor

Double-click the MIDI region in the Tracks area or select the region and press 'P' to open the Piano Roll editor. This presents a visual representation of your drum notes, typically with drum names on the Y-axis if using a Drum Kit Designer or similar instrument.

  3. Edit Notes and Velocities

In the Piano Roll, click and drag notes to adjust their position, duration, or pitch. Use the 'Velocity' tool (Cmd-click and drag on a note) or the 'MIDI Draw' area at the bottom to precisely control the force of each drum hit, adding expressiveness to your pattern.

  4. Quantize and Swing

Select the notes you wish to adjust and open the 'Quantize' sub-menu in the Inspector panel (press 'I'). Choose a quantization value (e.g., '1/16 Note') to snap selected notes to the grid. Experiment with the 'Swing' control to introduce a subtle rhythmic feel.
