Steps

  1. Setup Carrier and Modulator Tracks

Add an instance of Fruity Vocoder to your vocal (modulator) track in the Mixer. Then, route a separate synth (carrier) track, such as a Fruity DX10, to an unused Mixer insert and set its send knob to that same insert, typically above the vocoder on the vocal track.

  2. Configure Vocoder Inputs

Open the Fruity Vocoder plugin. In the bottom left, select your vocal track in the 'MOD' (Modulator) input dropdown and your synth track in the 'CAR' (Carrier) input dropdown. You should start hearing the vocoded effect instantly.

  3. Adjust Vocoder Parameters

Experiment with the 'Bandpass' filter controls, 'Mix' knob, and 'Formant' shifter to sculpt the timbre. The 'Attack' and 'Release' knobs will affect how the vocoder responds to the dynamics of the vocal.

  4. Add Effects and Refine

Further enhance your vocoder sound by adding effects like reverb or delay to the Mixer track where Fruity Vocoder resides. Use the Dry/Wet knob on the vocoder plugin to blend the effect with your original signal.
