Steps

  1. Switch to Pattern Mode

In the global transport panel at the top of FL Studio, ensure 'Pattern' is selected next to the song/pattern toggle. This allows you to work on individual patterns in the Channel Rack and Piano Roll without affecting the current Playlist arrangement. Use the Pattern selector to choose an existing pattern or create a new one.

  2. Build Patterns in the Channel Rack

Load instruments or samples into the Channel Rack. For percussive elements, left-click the steps (dark squares) next to each channel to quickly sequence a beat. Each row represents a channel, and each column a step in the pattern. You can adjust per-step velocity by right-clicking a step and dragging vertically.

  3. Compose Melodies in the Piano Roll

For melodic and harmonic elements, right-click a channel in the Channel Rack and select 'Piano roll' (or click the 'Piano Roll' icon on the Channel Rack). Use the Pencil tool to draw in notes, adjust their length, pitch, and velocity. The Piano Roll provides precise control over individual notes for complex musical phrases.

  4. Duplicate and Vary Patterns

To create variations of a pattern, select the pattern in the Pattern selector, then click the 'Pattern selector options' menu (small down arrow next to the pattern number). Choose 'Clone' to create an exact copy. You can then edit the cloned pattern independently, introducing fills or changes without altering the original.

  5. Arrange Patterns in the Playlist

Once patterns are created, switch back to 'Song' mode in the global transport panel ('Song' button). Drag patterns from the Pattern selector into the Playlist. You can place them in any track lane, repeat them, and overlap them to build the full structure of your song, combining multiple patterns per track for complex arrangements.
