Steps

  1. Save Live Set Regularly

Consistently save your project by going to 'File > Save Live Set' (Ctrl+S / Cmd+S) or 'File > Save Live Set As...' (Shift+Ctrl+S / Shift+Cmd+S) to create new versions. It's good practice to increment file names (e.g., 'Song_v1', 'Song_v2') for easy rollback.

  2. Collect All and Save

Before moving or archiving a project, go to 'File > Collect All and Save'. This command gathers all external files (samples, presets, etc.) used in your project and saves them into the project folder, ensuring everything is self-contained and preventing 'media offline' errors.

  3. Manage Live's Backup Folders

Ableton Live automatically creates a 'Backup' folder within your project folder. This folder contains automatically saved versions of your Live Set. To recover an older version, simply open a file from this folder. Regularly check this folder's contents and periodically delete very old, unneeded backups to save disk space.

  4. Utilize Live's Autosave

Ensure autosave is active and configured by going to 'Options > Preferences' (Ctrl+, / Cmd+,) and selecting the 'File/Folder' tab. Adjust the 'Autosave Rate' to a suitable interval (e.g., 5 or 10 minutes) to minimize data loss in case of a crash or power outage.
