How to use Limiter

Master the Limiter plugin in Logic Pro to prevent clipping, maximize loudness, and achieve a professional final polish on your audio tracks and master bus.

Steps

  1. Insert Limiter

For individual tracks, select the track, then in an empty Audio FX slot in the Inspector, navigate to 'Dynamics' > 'Limiter' > 'Stereo'. For the master output, insert it on the Stereo Out channel in the Mixer.

  2. Set Output Level

Typically, set the 'Output Level' (or 'Ceiling') of the Limiter to -0.1 dB (or -0.3 dB) to ensure no digital clipping occurs. This creates a safety margin for playback on various systems.

  3. Adjust Gain and Release

Increase the 'Gain' (or 'Threshold' in some versions) knob to make the signal louder. Watch the gain reduction meter; you want to achieve desired loudness without crushing the dynamics. Adjust 'Release' to control how quickly the limiter recovers, avoiding pumping artifacts.

  4. Audition and Fine-Tune

Listen carefully to the impact of the Limiter. Ensure the dynamics are preserved adequately and that no unwanted distortion or pumping is introduced. Use the 'Lookahead' parameter to anticipate transients and achieve smoother limiting if available.
