Steps

  1. Insert Compressor Plugin

On the track you want to process, navigate to an empty Audio FX slot in the Mixer or Smart Controls. Select 'Dynamics > Compressor' to add the plugin to your signal chain.

  2. Adjust Threshold and Ratio

Lower the 'Threshold' knob until the gain reduction meter starts to move consistently on the loudest parts. Increase the 'Ratio' to determine how aggressively the compressor reduces signals above the threshold.

  3. Fine-Tune Attack and Release

Set 'Attack' to control how quickly the compressor reacts to incoming signals (fast for punch, slow for transparency). Adjust 'Release' to determine how quickly the compressor stops reducing gain after the signal drops below the threshold.

  4. Apply Make-up Gain

Use the 'Gain' knob (often labeled Output Gain) to compensate for the reduction in volume caused by compression. Aim for a similar perceived loudness before and after compression.
