Steps

  1. Add the Velocity MIDI Effect

Locate the 'MIDI Effects' category in Ableton Live's Browser. Drag the 'Velocity' device onto a MIDI track, before an instrument. This will process incoming MIDI velocity data before it reaches your instrument.

  2. Adjust Velocity Parameters

In the Device View, manipulate the 'Drive' control to increase or decrease the overall velocity of incoming notes. Use the 'Random' knob to introduce subtle, human-like variations in velocity for a more natural feel.

  3. Apply Fixed or Gated Velocity

Set the 'Fixed' parameter to a specific value if you want all incoming notes to have the same velocity, regardless of input. Alternatively, use 'Out Low' and 'Out High' to set a velocity range, effectively gating velocities outside this range.

  4. Shape Velocity Curves

Utilize the 'Curve' parameter to define how incoming velocity values are mapped to outgoing velocities. Experiment with different curve shapes to achieve various dynamic responses, from subtle to aggressive.
