Steps

  1. Load Impulse onto a MIDI Track

In Ableton Live's Browser, navigate to 'Instruments' and drag the 'Impulse' device onto a MIDI track. Impulse offers eight slots, each capable of holding a single sample.

  2. Load Samples into Impulse Slots

Drag an audio sample directly from Live's Browser or your computer's file system into one of Impulse's eight sample slots. Each slot corresponds to a specific MIDI note (from C1 upwards).

  3. Shape Sample Playback

For each loaded sample, adjust parameters like 'Gain', 'Decay', 'Attack', 'Pitch', and 'Pan' within Impulse to sculpt the sound. Use the 'Stretch' mode to re-pitch the sample without changing its length, or 'Gate Off' to stop playback when the MIDI note ends.

  4. Utilize Filters and Envelopes

Explore Impulse's built-in filter section to add warmth or cut frequencies, and use the 'Filter Env' controls to apply dynamic filter sweeps. Modulate these parameters for expressive percussive elements.
