Steps

  1. Insert MIDI Monitor

In the 'Browser', navigate to 'MIDI Effects'. Drag the 'MIDI Monitor' device onto a MIDI track. This typically goes onto the track where you expect MIDI input (from a controller) or just before an instrument.

  2. Send MIDI to the Track

Ensure your MIDI input device is properly configured in 'Options > Preferences > Link/Tempo/MIDI' and that 'Track' is enabled for its input. Then, select the MIDI track containing the MIDI Monitor and set its 'MIDI From' input to your controller or another track sending MIDI.

  3. Observe MIDI Messages

As you play notes, move controllers, or send MIDI messages, the 'MIDI Monitor' device in the Device View will display a real-time log of the incoming MIDI data. This includes note on/off messages, velocity, aftertouch, CC messages, pitch bend, and more.

  4. Analyze Message Types and Values

Pay attention to the 'Type', 'Channel', and 'Value' columns in the MIDI Monitor. This information is crucial for debugging why a certain parameter isn't responding or to identify the exact MIDI message a controller is sending for mapping purposes.
