How to edit random MIDI

Learn to humanize and vary MIDI performances in Ableton Live using the Random MIDI effect. Add subtle or extreme randomness to velocity and pitch.

Steps

  1. Add Random MIDI Effect

In Ableton Live's Browser, navigate to 'Categories' > 'MIDI Effects' > 'Random'. Drag and drop the "Random" device onto a MIDI track before any instrument device. This will process the incoming MIDI notes.

  2. Adjust Chance and Choices

The 'Chance' parameter determines the probability (as a percentage) that a note will be affected by the Random device. 'Choices' sets how many different random values the device can select from, influencing the range of variation.

  3. Control Velocity Randomization

Use the 'Vel.' (Velocity) section to humanize note dynamics. 'Add' introduces a random value to the note's velocity, while 'Scale' multiplies it. 'Map' remaps the velocity to a new range. Experiment with these to add subtle human feel or dramatic velocity changes.

  4. Implement Pitch Randomization

In the 'Pitch' section, 'Add' will transpose notes by a random semitone value, creating accidental melodies or detuned effects. 'Scale' will proportionally stretch or compress the note's pitch. Be cautious with these settings as they can quickly lead to dissonant results.
