How to use Environment in Logic Pro

Explore the Environment in Logic Pro, a powerful tool for advanced MIDI routing, processing, and creating custom instruments and effects.

Steps

  1. Open the Environment Window

Go to 'Window > Open Environment' or use the shortcut 'Cmd-8'. This will open the Environment window, which displays objects like physical inputs, MIDI instruments, and internal generators as interconnected modules.

  2. Navigate Layers and Create Objects

The Environment features different 'Layers' such as 'Clicks & Ports', 'Audio Instruments', and 'Mixer'. Use the 'Layer' dropdown menu to switch between them. To create a new object, go to 'New' in the menu bar and select an object type like 'Monitor', 'Transformer', 'Fader', or 'Instrument'.

  3. Connect Objects for MIDI Flow

To route MIDI, click and drag from the output port (the small triangle) of one object to the input port of another. For example, connect a 'Physical Input' object to a 'Monitor' to see incoming MIDI data, or route through a 'Transformer' to modify MIDI messages before reaching an instrument.

  4. Utilize Object Parameters and Cables

Select an object and its parameters will appear in the Inspector on the left. Adjust settings like MIDI channel or event filtering. Remember to save custom Environment setups as 'Templates' within Logic to reuse them in future projects.
