Steps

  1. Enable Record Arm and Automation Record

Ensure the track you want to automate is 'Record Armed' (red button on the track header). Then, activate the global 'Automation Arm' button (the square record icon with a circle inside) in the transport bar at the top of Live. This prepares Live to capture your parameter changes.

  2. Begin Recording Automation

Start playback in Session or Arrangement View. While Live is playing and the Automation Arm is active, move or adjust any parameter (e.g., a fader, knob on a VST, or effect dial). Live will record these movements as automation envelopes.

  3. View and Edit Automation

After recording, stop playback. In Arrangement View, expand the track and select the 'Show Automation' button (circle with a small arrow) to reveal the automation lane. You can select the automated parameter from the dropdown menu and manually edit the breakpoints with your mouse.

  4. Clear or Disable Automation

To remove recorded automation, select the automation segment in the automation lane and press 'Delete'. To temporarily disable automation for a parameter without deleting it, right-click the parameter in the device and select 'Clear Automation'.
