Steps

  1. Enable Automation View

In Arrangement View, press 'A' on your keyboard or click the 'Automation Mode' button in the top right of the interface to display automation lanes for all tracks.

  2. Select Volume Automation

On the track you wish to automate, click the dropdown menu within its automation lane. Navigate to 'Mixer' > 'Volume'. A horizontal line representing the track's volume will appear.

  3. Draw Volume Automation

Switch to 'Draw Mode' by pressing 'B' or clicking the pencil icon. Click and drag in the volume automation lane to create points and draw curves, making the volume increase or decrease over time. For precise adjustments, switch back to 'Selection Mode' (arrow icon) to move individual points or segments.

  4. Record Volume Automation

Alternatively, enable 'Automation Arm' (the small square 'A' button in the transport bar) and the global 'Record' button. Play your track and physically move the track's volume fader in the Mixer section. Your movements will be recorded as automation points.

  5. Select Pan Automation

For panning, select 'Mixer' > 'Pan' from the automation lane's dropdown menu. A centerline will appear, with the ability to move it left or right to control the stereo position.

  6. Draw or Record Pan Automation

Similar to volume, either draw in your pan movements using 'Draw Mode' or record them live by enabling 'Automation Arm' and adjusting the track's pan knob during playback.
