Steps
Enable Automation Record
In Ableton Live's Arrangement View or Session View, click the 'Automation Record' button (a red circle) in the transport bar. This prepares Live to record parameter changes as automation.
Record Real-time Automation
While Live is playing and 'Automation Record' is enabled, tweak a parameter on any device with your mouse or a MIDI controller. The changes will be recorded as an automation envelope on the track.
Draw Automation Manually
Select a track in Arrangement View, then click the 'Arrangement Automation Mode' toggle button (two circles connected by a line) or press 'A' on your keyboard. Choose the desired parameter from the track header's drop-down menus, then draw in automation using the pencil tool.
Edit Automation Breakpoints
In Arrangement View with 'Arrangement Automation Mode' enabled, click and drag existing automation breakpoints to adjust their values and timing. Right-click on a breakpoint to open global editing options or add curvature.
