How to Create Volume Automation in Logic Pro

Dynamically adjust the volume of tracks over time to add movement, emphasis, and clarity to your mix.

Steps

  1. Show Automation

Select the track you want to automate. Press 'A' on your keyboard to toggle automation view on/off. A translucent automation lane will appear below the selected track.

  2. Select 'Volume' Parameter

In the automation lane header, there's a dropdown menu (usually defaults to 'Volume'). Ensure 'Volume' is selected, as this is the most common parameter to automate.

  3. Draw Automation Points

Using the 'Pointer' tool, click on the automation line (which represents the current volume level) to create automation points. Drag these points up or down to change the volume at that specific time. You can create multiple points to draw curves or specific fades.

  4. Create a Section of Automation

Click and drag to select a section of the automation line. Once selected, you can drag the entire section up or down to adjust its volume, or use the 'Pencil' tool to draw freehand automation curves.

  5. Use Automation Modes (Write/Touch/Latch)

In the Control Bar (at the top), there's a dropdown menu for 'Automation Mode' (often labeled 'Read'). Change this to 'Latch' or 'Touch' to record fader movements in real-time. 'Write' mode overwrites existing automation. Remember to switch back to 'Read' mode after recording automation to ensure it plays back correctly.

  6. Copy/Paste Automation

You can copy and paste automation data between regions or tracks. Select a region with automation, go to 'Edit' > 'Automation' > 'Copy/Paste Automation' or use the relevant keyboard shortcuts.
