Steps
Add Vocoder and Carrier Signal
Drag 'Vocoder' from 'Audio Effects' in Live's Browser onto an audio track containing a vocal or percussive sound (the 'Modulator'). Then, place an instrument, like 'Analog' or 'Wavetable', on a separate MIDI track to act as the 'Carrier' signal.
Route Carrier to Vocoder
On the track with the Vocoder, open the 'Audio From' dropdown menu in the Vocoder device. Select the MIDI track name containing your carrier instrument. This routes the carrier into the Vocoder's sidechain input.
Adjust Gate and Formant Parameters
Play both the modulator and carrier tracks simultaneously. Adjust the 'Gate' threshold on the Vocoder to control when the effect engages and use the 'Formant' control to shift the vocal or harmonic character of the output sound up or down.
Select Vocoder Band Mode
Experiment with different 'Band' modes (e.g., 'Enhanced', 'Retro', 'FIR') and the 'Bands' knob to change the character and clarity of the vocoded sound. Lower band counts create a more synthetic, robotic sound, while higher counts offer more intelligibility.
