Steps

  1. Insert Glue Compressor

From Live's Browser, navigate to 'Audio Effects' and drag 'Glue Compressor' onto an individual track, a drum bus, or your Master track. It will appear in the Device View, ready for shaping your dynamics.

  2. Set Threshold and Makeup Gain

Lower the 'Threshold' knob until you see consistent gain reduction on the meter (e.g., -3 to -6 dB). Compensate for lost volume by increasing the 'Makeup' gain knob to match the original perceived loudness, aiming for transparent compression.

  3. Adjust Attack and Release

Use 'Attack' to control how quickly the compressor reacts to incoming signals (faster attacks catch transients). Adjust 'Release' to set how quickly the compressor stops reducing gain (faster releases can add pump, slower ones create smoother sustain).

  4. Experiment with Ratio and Soft Clip

Change the 'Ratio' to control the intensity of compression (e.g., 2:1 for gentle glue, 4:1 for more noticeable control). Activate 'Soft Clip' for subtle saturation and limiting, which can add warmth and prevent harsh peaks when driving the compressor hard.
