Steps
Insert Beat Repeat
In Ableton Live's Browser, navigate to 'Categories' > 'Audio Effects' > 'Beat Repeat'. Drag and drop the "Beat Repeat" device onto an audio or MIDI track. Place it after any instrument or other effects you want to process.
Set Grid and Interval
The 'Grid' parameter determines the size of the repeated slice of audio, selectable from 1/32 to 4 bars. 'Interval' sets how often the repeat will occur in relation to the global tempo. Start with small grid values and short intervals for classic stutter effects.
Manipulate Pitch and Gate
Use the 'Pitch' control to transpose the repeated slice up or down in semitones, creating interesting vocal or instrumental jumps. The 'Gate' parameter controls the length of the repeated slices, allowing for tighter or looser rhythmic effects. A lower gate value cuts the repeats shorter.
Activate Filter, Repeat, and Chance
Toggle the 'Filter' on to apply a low-pass filter to the repeats, smoothing their sound. 'Repeat' determines how many times the slice is repeated before moving on. 'Chance' sets the probability that Beat Repeat will activate on the next interval, allowing for sporadic glitches rather than constant ones.
