Steps

  1. Insert Auto Filter

In Ableton Live's Browser, navigate to 'Categories' > 'Audio Effects' > 'Auto Filter'. Drag and drop the "Auto Filter" device onto an audio or MIDI track after your instrument or other effects. This device is excellent for resonant sweeps and dynamic filtering.

  2. Select Filter Type and Frequency

Choose your desired filter type (Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, Notch) from the Type selector. Adjust the 'Frequency' knob to determine the cutoff point of the filter. The 'Resonance' knob boosts the frequencies around the cutoff, creating a more pronounced filter effect.

  3. Utilize Envelope Follower

Engage the 'Env' (Envelope) section to modulate the filter frequency based on the incoming audio's amplitude. 'Amount' controls the intensity of the envelope's effect, while 'Attack' and 'Release' adjust how quickly the envelope responds to and decays from the audio signal, respectively.

  4. Apply LFO Modulation

Activate the 'LFO' section to introduce rhythmic or cyclical movement to the filter. Set the 'Rate' for the speed of the LFO, adjust 'Amount' for the depth of modulation, and choose an 'LFO Shape' (Sine, Triangle, Saw Up, Saw Down, Square, Random) for different modulation curves. Sync the LFO to your project tempo for synced rhythmic effects.
