Steps

  1. Create Automation Envelopes

In Arrangement View, click the 'Automation Mode' button (or press 'A'). Select the track you want to automate. Then, from the dropdown menus below the track header, choose the device and parameter you wish to modulate. Draw in your modulation curve directly on the track.

  2. Use MIDI Clip Envelopes

Double-click a MIDI clip to open the MIDI Note Editor. At the bottom, click 'Show/Hide Envelopes'. Select 'MIDI Ctrl' in the top dropdown and then choose a MIDI CC number (e.g., Mod Wheel, Expression) to draw in continuous controller modulation that affects plugins or instruments.

  3. Map LFO to Parameters

Drag an 'LFO' device (from Audio Effects > Max for Live > LFO) onto a track. Click the 'Map' button on the LFO, then click the desired parameter on any device to assign the LFO to modulate it. Adjust the LFO's 'Rate' and 'Amount' for rhythmic or evolving modulation.

  4. Utilize Macro Controls for Control

Group devices into an Instrument Rack or Audio Effect Rack (Ctrl/Cmd + G). Click the 'Macro' button and right-click on any device parameter, choosing 'Map to Macro X'. Now, one Macro knob can simultaneously control multiple modulated parameters across different devices.
