How to create randomizer

Discover how to create randomized parameters within Ableton Live's MIDI and audio effects, adding organic variation and unexpected musicality to your projects.

Steps

  1. Apply a Random MIDI Effect

From Live's Browser, navigate to 'MIDI Effects' and drag 'Random' onto a MIDI track before any instrument. This device will introduce random velocity, note choice, or chance to your MIDI notes.

  2. Configure Random MIDI Parameters

In the 'Random' device, adjust 'Chance' to set the probability of a note being randomized, and 'Choices' to define the number of possible random variations. Use 'Alt' to shift velocities or notes randomly on subsequent passes.

  3. Introduce Parameter Modulation with LFO

Drag an 'LFO' (from Audio Effects > Max for Live > LFO if not in standard effects) onto a track with an instrument or audio effect. Click the 'Map' button on the LFO, then click a parameter on any device to assign the LFO to modulate it randomly over time.

  4. Use Max for Live's 'Radian' Device (Advanced)

For more controlled randomization, search for 'Radian' in Live's Browser (under Max for Live). Drop it on a track and use its 'Dice' icon to generate random patterns, or its sliders and step sequencers to create intricate, evolving randomizations over time.
