Updating Studio and fixing update problems
How Music-Prod Studio updates itself and how to fix update messages like parentWritable or a frozen relaunch.
Music-Prod Studio: Downloading, updating, permissions, and the free Tools in the Mac app.
Steps
- Keep Music-Prod Studio in your Applications folder. Studio checks for updates for itself and the Music-Prod plug-ins about a minute after launch and then daily while open.
- To check by hand, open Settings ▸ Updates and click "Check Now". The Updates page (Updates in the sidebar footer) shows where an update is: Checking, Up to date, Downloading, Ready to install, and so on.
- When a badge says "Music-Prod Studio X is available", click "Update now" (or "Later"). If an update has waited 7 days, Studio installs it the next time it opens (a "Not now" button is shown).
- Wait while Studio downloads and checks the update (signature, notarization, and checksum). You can cancel while it downloads.
- When the status says Ready to install, click "Install and Relaunch" (or "Not Now"). Studio swaps in the new version and reopens in a moment; if the new version fails its health check, Studio rolls back.
Troubleshooting
"This Mac is not ready for the update: parentWritable" or "Can't update from this location" / "Can't update here"
Studio can't write to the folder it runs from, so it can't replace itself. If it runs from Downloads or from the disk image (/Volumes/…), quit Studio, drag Music-Prod Studio into Applications (Finder may ask for an administrator password), eject the disk image, and open it from Applications; newer builds do this with "Move to Applications". On a Standard (non-admin) Mac account, an administrator types their name and password ("Install with administrator password" in newer builds), or download the latest version from music-prod.com/studio and drag it into Applications with an administrator's help. If Studio is already in Applications, try again once; if it keeps failing, download the latest version from music-prod.com/studio and replace the app in Applications (keep only one copy). Still failing? Ask the Help chat.
"recoverySubsystem" or "An earlier update didn't finish cleanly…"
Click "Repair" on the Updates page. Since 2.0.60, Studio finishes interrupted updates at launch. If the message stays, install the latest version by hand from music-prod.com/studio.
"Studio couldn't confirm how the earlier update ended… Show in Finder…"
Ask the Help chat to pass this to the owner, who needs the contents of that folder.
"diskSpace"
Free up disk space on your Mac and try the update again.
"stagedBundleSignature" / "didn't pass the security check"
Try again later. If it keeps happening, ask the Help chat to pass it to the owner.
"stagingRootAccessible" / "transactionSubsystem" / "couldn't use its update folder"
Restart your Mac and try updating again. If it still fails, install the latest version by hand from music-prod.com/studio.
"currentAppBundle…/Signature", "This copy of Music-Prod Studio couldn't be checked", or "This build of Music-Prod Studio is incomplete"
Download the latest version from music-prod.com/studio and drag it into your Applications folder to replace the current copy.
"targetVersionNewer"
Nothing needs to be installed: you already have that version.
"Another Studio update is already in progress"
Wait for it to finish, or quit and reopen Music-Prod Studio.
Download authorization failed or Download failed
Check your internet connection and that you are signed in to Music-Prod Studio, then try again. If it keeps failing, ask the Help chat.
Studio freezes on Quit or after "Install and Relaunch" (2.0.55–2.0.58)
Studio 2.0.55–2.0.58 could hang when quitting or after "Install and Relaunch" while signed in: the window looks alive, but Quit is greyed out and buttons do nothing. It was fixed in 2.0.59. Press ⌥⌘Esc (Option-Command-Escape), choose Music-Prod Studio, click Force Quit, then open it again from Applications. If the update then shows "Repair needed" or keeps failing, click Repair, or install the latest version from music-prod.com/studio by hand once.
Studio 2.0.13–2.0.16 doesn't update itself
Builds 2.0.13–2.0.16 couldn't update themselves. Install the latest version by hand once from music-prod.com/studio.
